A reliable terrazzo flooring contractor in Europe to carry out a project

The worldwide interest in terrazzo has been growing and we hope it will remain popular for a long time. The classic terrazzo, which means “terrace” in Italian, is a material used for floor finishing. It is made by mixing aggregate (such as marble, granite, or basalt) with concrete, which is then sanded and polished after drying.

Terrazzo in the beginning

The origin of terrazzo can be traced back to the Venice region, where it is also known as Venetian flooring (“pavimento alla Veneziana”). Despite its current association with luxury, terrazzo was originally developed about 500 years ago as an affordable flooring solution. To reduce costs, Venetian construction workers used crushed marble chips mixed with clay instead of expensive marble slabs. Terrazzo can often be found in the floors and terraces of palaces or tenement houses in many northern Italian cities. Its peak popularity was during the period from the 1930s to the 1970s.

 Terrazzo in communist times

In Europe, a variation of terrazzo, known as a mosaic (distinct from the original type of mosaic), became popular in the Eastern bloc during communist times. It is made from very small pieces of marble mixed with cement.

Terrazzo and its predecessor, mosaic, gained popularity due to their durability, easy maintenance, and relatively low production cost. The earlier version, mosaic, was commonly used by communists in public buildings such as churches, theaters, schools, and common areas of flats (such as entrance lobbies, corridors, and staircases). In many places, these floors still remain in use and still looks well, even if there are cracks.

Terrazzo nowadays

In the world of modern contemporary interior design, terrazzo has made a comeback. It has become a favorite among architects as it gives a unique character to each project. These days, epoxy terrazzo is the most popular type, as it is thinner, seamless, has vibrant colors, and offers unlimited design possibilities.

Even more, the new system application techniques of epoxy terrazzo include a moisture mitigation membrane to control water vapor evaporation and a crack suppression membrane reinforced with fiberglass mesh underlayer, to ensure that the terrazzo installation is durable and long-lasting.
